The 47-year-old was contracted to the club until 2018, but he will be allowed to leave in a few months’ time:
“We had talks with Jürgen in the last few days and came to the mutual decision that the way will end at the end of the season.” Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke said.
“It has been difficult for us because we have a very special relationship with each other.”
Klopp then said: “I always said that when the moment comes where I believe I am not the perfect coach anymore for this extraordinary club, I will say so.”
“I chose this time to announce it because in recent years some player decisions were made late and you couldn’t react.
“I really think the decision is the right one. This club deserves to be coached by the 100 per cent right manager.
“It’s not that I am tired, I don’t have any contact with another club but I don’t plan to take a year off either.”
Klopp has enjoyed a successful time in charge of the Bundesliga side, guiding them to the title in 2011 and 2012, as well as the Champions League final in 2013.
