LUKAKU SO MUCH MORE THAN A GOAL SCORER
Romelu Lukaku has been one of the best strikers in the Premier League so far, plundering 15 goals so far. While he was unable to add to that tally today, the bruising Belgian demonstrated some of his other attributes that make him such a tough opponent for defences.
The former Chelsea ace set up Aaron Lennon after holding off a challenge in the box and cushioning his header in the path of the eventual goalscorer. That was his FIFTH assist of the season, showing he is so much more than a poacher.
His all round play was strong all day, looking like a young Didier Drogba at times. Perhaps should have made more of his chances towards the end of the game, but the 21-year old is a real handful.
He’s come into his own this season, oh how Chelsea must be ruining the day they sold him.
SPURS STILL GETTING USED TO POCH PLANS
Spurs are an excellent team to watch going forward and extremely solid at the back, having conceded just 16 goals all term. They are well in the title race as of now and look a good bet to finish in the top four.
However, the players are still clearly getting used to Pochettino’s demands. Towards the end of games, they look a tad leggy and susceptible to a counter attack.
Clearly, this is understandable as the ex-Southampton coach is working with a lot of new players, and it is also barely proving to be too much of a hindrance.
Still, it’s encouraging that the players will no doubt grow into such a system more while they improve fitness levels. Imagine how far they could go once the system is truly engrained.
STONES STILL A RISK
John Stones is a wonderfully gifted defender, with a composure on the ball comparable to a certain Rio Ferdinand. It’s clear to see why top clubs around the continent are keeping a close eye over his situation on Merseyside.
However, at times today, the 21-year old appeared to take too long in clearing the ball, preferring to turn players within his own box. While the ex-Barnsley youngster did his best to assure fans he remained in control of the situation, he had taken risks.
It’s hard to criticise the England international for having such composure, but taking such risks is, well, extremely risky.
DEULOFEU DELIVERS
Gerard Deulofeu is a wonderful option to have on the bench. The Spaniard was introduced in the second in half to replace Lennon and proved to be a marked improvement, despite the latter’s goal.
The trickster toyed with the stoic Spurs defence, constantly providing a threat from wide options with such unpredictability. As a wide forward, the La Masia graduate can help turn games in their favour.
While he was unable to do so today, he sure came close to teeing up Romelu Lukaku after twisting and turning Ben Davies.
ALLI ALL BUT SET FOR THE EUROS
It’s really, really, really hard to believe Dele Alli was plying his trade in League One this time last season. The 19-year old’s brilliant control and strike levelled the scores, while he was thoroughly impressive all afternoon.
He ghosted between John Stones and Ramiro Funes Mori to chest a Toby Alderweireld diagonal ball, before sending a first time volley past Tim Howard.
Surely a certain inclusion in Roy Hodgson’s Three Lions squad, the Spurs ace could even push for starting berth during next summer’s showpiece.
