The 21 year-old has been sensational so far this season, and this is the absolute worst time of the season to lose key players, but Jurgen Klopp does have two experienced internationals waiting in the wings.
Dejan Lovren certainly has mistakes in him, but the World Cup finalist has been slowly improving since the arrival of Klopp.
He has taken loads of stick from both Liverpool fans and rivals since his move to Merseyside, but had his best spell of form in a red shirt towards the end of last season.
Then there is Joel Matip, who partnered van Dijk during Wednesday’s win at Burnley.
Matip is fantastic in the air, but he has yet to prove he can perform consistently in the Premier League, and Lovren’s experience should make him the clear choice for Klopp.
