da roleta: According to The Evening Standard, Crystal Palace are keen on a move for Liverpool’s out-of-favour forward Dominic Solanke as they look to bolster their striking options going into the second half of the season. However, a move for one of Solanke’s teammates, Divock Origi, might be more worthwhile.
What’s the word?
Well, The Evening Standard reports that Palace are considering a swoop for Solanke with the hope that the 21-year-old will be keen to make the switch to Selhurst Park having seen the success of Ruben Loftus-Cheek last season.
None of the Eagles’ orthodox striker options have netted in the league this season and don’t particularly look like doing so any time soon. This lack of goals has been a recurring problem since their promotion to the Premier League in 2013 – indeed, their top scorer, since his arrival in January 2017, is midfielder Luka Milivojevic: the penalty taker.
While a loan move for Solanke would certainly be an upgrade on the likes of Jordan Ayew and Alexander Sorloth, Roy Hodgson and co. can do one better by going after the Englishman’s closest competition in Origi.
Not the time for taking risks
Crystal Palace have, again, found themselves in a relegation battle and last season’s lack of potency in the final third has carried on into the current campaign – they have found the net only 14 times thus far, the second least in the league.
In recent windows, the Eagles have taken risks in their dealings, perhaps due to a lack of funds, but the £8m January signing of Alexander Sorloth represents the most perplexing – the big Norwegian looks completely the wrong fit for Hodgson’s style and hasn’t scored since his arrival.
Palace desperately need a proven goalscorer who can reliably apply a finishing touch – in Wilfried Zaha and Max Meyer they have plenty of flair and creation but, at the moment, there is no one who can get into the dangerous areas and do, what should be, the easy bit. Perhaps signing a player who has yet to make an appearance for his side this season is too big a risk to take for a sign struggling to this extent.
Divock Origi has the physical stature and pace to be successful in the Prem and his ability to play all across the front-line will mean he fits more seamlessly into Hodgson’s fluidly-rotating 4-4-2 – the strikers have a tendency to drift out wide and supply the crosses.
At 23, the Belgian still has a huge scope for improvement and has proved he can do the business in front of goal despite his limited chances, as he bagged the only goal of the game in a tight Merseyside derby. Would he be a better move than Solanke? Let us know by voting in the poll below…
