Tottenham Hotspur could make a shock move for former PSG and Barcelona defender Dani Alves this summer, per Duncan Castles of The Transfer Window Podcast.
The Brazil international, who helped his country to glory in the Copa America in the summer, has already been the subject of talks, with Spurs making “contact” with the 36-year-old, per Castles.
On paper, this looks like a move that is largely out-of-keeping with the way the club acquire talent. They often prize younger players with high resale values, the likes of Dele Alli and Jack Clarke.
Yet this summer has seen a change occur. The club made a move to sign Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon, paying a club-record fee to bring in a proven talent in the European game. It sent a statement that they are intent on challenging again next season after reaching the Champions League final in 2018/19.
And Alves would be a similar acquisition; in fact, he could be even better.
Indeed, one needs only look at his Wikipedia page to see the sheer amount of trophies he has won, which is a whopping 42. He has lifted the Champions League three times.
Let’s compare that to Spurs. As a club, since Alves made his professional debut in 2001, they have won the League Cup. That’s it.
Bringing in such a serial winner can only be a good thing.

Indeed, Mauricio Pochettino’s men signed 32-year-old Fernando Llorente in 2017, bringing a World Cup winner to the club not just for his footballing ability but also for his “been there done that” mentality.
Who better to follow Llorente – whose contract has expired – than Alves?
Not only is he still an exceptional right-back who continues to play for Brazil, but he is also one of the most decorated players in world football.
Who better for Kyle Walker-Peters, the young full-back looking for his breakthrough, to learn from?
Alves would be a phenomenal signing for Spurs because of his age and experience; he could be just as important as Ndombele if he ends up making the switch to north London.
